The 5th Global Travel & Tourism Summit, which will take place in New Delhi from April 8-10, will be the venue for The World Travel & Tourism Council(WTTC) to announce a host of new economic forecasts and initiatives.

Tsunami Impact
Prior to the official opening of the Summit, Richard Miller, WTTC Executive Vice President will present an economic analysis of the impact of the Indian Ocean Tsunami. To date a wide range of figures have been quoted but nothing has reached the public domain that considers all the affectedcountries on a like-for-like basis, using an analytical method endorsed by the UN.

Global Forecasts
At the same press conference, Richard Miller will also present WTTC`s 2005 forecast projecting the economic performance of the Travel & Tourism sector on a global basis and specifically in India, the host country of the Summit. Over the last year, the industry has shown great resilience following an extended period of difficulty due to war, terrorism, disease and economic downturn. However, it is not known whether the recovery will continue and if so to what extent. WTTC`s analyses will provide answers and will go into considerable detail.

Crisis Forecasting Model
During a special breakfast session, sponsored by Marriott International, on the second day (April 9th), WTTC will release details of a new economic model that will be able to forecast the impact of crisis events on the Travel & Tourism industry. After answering a series of quantitative and qualitative questions, the model uses information from eight previous crises (including 9/11, SARS, and the Gulf War) to forecast the impact of a new event on any one of 174 countries.

Development of Travel & Tourism in China
At lunch time on April 9th, a media briefing will take place on the development of Travel & Tourism in China and a new WTTC initiative in that country. Taking part will be:

  • Giovanni Angelini, CEO & Managing Director, Shangri-la Hotels & Resorts
  • Jean-Claude Baumgarten, President, WTTC
  • Edouard Ettedgui, Group Chief Executive, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group
  • Richard Miller, Executive Vice President, WTTC
  • Wang Ping, Chairman, Chamber of Tourism Commerce, China Federations of Industry Commerce
  • Vincent Wolfington, Chairman WTTC and Chairman Emeritus, Carey International
  • Peter Wong, Chairman, MK Corporation

Jean-Claude Baumgarten, President, WTTC said: As one of the largest industries in the world today, responsible for employing more than 200 million people and generating over 10 per cent of global GDP, Travel & Tourism is of great strategic importance. It is essential that government and industry leaders have authoritative data on which to base their decisions and to plan for the future. At WTTC, we are determined to produce authoritative information and to assist others to use it in a way that will benefit all interested parties alike, from private enterprise to national economies and local communities.
