LATAM Airlines Group expands at MIA with its forst maintenance hangar in the U.S.

New facility represents $15 million investment.

MIAMI – LATAM Airlines Group, the largest airline group for cargo flights in Latin America and one of the largest overall in the world, hosted a ceremony at Miami International Airport on December 16 to celebrate the grand opening of its first maintenance hangar outside of South America. Community and business leaders joined airline and airport officials for the inauguration of the new 98,242-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility, which will service the airline’s passenger and cargo fleet at MIA.

Based in Chile, LATAM had originally planned to build the facility in South America, but Miami-Dade County and State of Florida officials successfully convinced the airline to instead construct it at MIA – resulting in an investment of $15 million at the airport. An average of 145 passenger and cargo flights from LATAM Airlines Group and its affiliates take off from MIA each week.

LAN Cargo was also recognized at the event for achieving International Organization of Standardization (ISO) 14001:2004 certification for its cargo operations and facilities at MIA – the first airline at the airport to do so. The certification validates the impact of LAN’s policies to meet and comply with ISO 14001:2004 standards for controlling and reducing its environmental impact. ISO is an independent, non-governmental international organization with a membership of 162 national standards bodies.
