MIA set to add Italian airline Meridiana in December

Italian carrier will begin two weekly roundtrip flights between MIA and Milan.

MIAMI – Italian airline Meridiana announced last week that it will begin serving Miami International Airport with two weekly flights from Milan starting on December 2, 2016. All flights will operate with Boeing 767-300 aircraft, which seats as many as 316 passengers.

Meridiana will add to MIA’s current service to Italy, which includes daily direct flights to Milan with American Airlines and to Rome with Alitalia. MIA serves more than 275,000 passengers annually to and from Italy.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome yet another international carrier to our growing roster of airlines serving European destinations,” said Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio T. González. “In the first quarter of 2016, passenger traffic from Italy to MIA was up 15 percent, and we look forward to seeing Meridiana bolster that growth trend with their new service to Milan.”

In addition to Meridiana, MIA will welcome five other airlines starting Miami service in the coming months. In September, Eurowings will launch three weekly flights to Cologne, Germany; Ft. Lauderdale-based Silver Airways will start four weekly flights to Bimini, Bahamas; Scandinavian Airlines will launch daily service, with three weekly flights to Copenhagen, Denmark and four weekly flights to Oslo, Norway; and Dominican Wings will begin one weekly flight to both Punta Cana and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. In October, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will return to MIA with three weekly flights to Amsterdam. MIA is currently served by 102 passenger and cargo-only airlines – the most of any U.S. airport.

Founded in 1963, Meridiana is an entirely private capital Italian airline headquartered in Olbia, Italy. Meridiana offers a wide range of flights and leisure-type destinations: from the main Italian airports, it is possible to reach Sardinia (Olbia and Cagliari), Sicily and Naples, as well as major holiday destinations in the Mediterranean or in Egypt such as the Canary Islands, Greece and the Red Sea. The principal long-range destinations mainly serviced from Milan Malpensa and/or Rome Fiumicino are the Maldives, Mauritius, Kenya, Zanzibar, Santo Domingo and Brazil.
