Following talks with Israel`s Ministry of Tourism, Italian tour company Turisanda will begin to market Israel to Italian travelers. The contacts with Turisanda are part of the Tourism Ministry`s wider strategy to broaden Israel`s appeal beyond traditional markets.

Turisanda is one of Italy`s biggest tour companies, specializing in high-end leisure travel and educational tours. The company is owned by Hotelplan, one of Europe`s largest tourism concerns. Hotelplan services close to two million travelers per year. Turisanda will sell tour packages to Israel through a network of 4,000 travel agents throughout Italy.

The Ministry of Tourism`s marketing strategy is key to increasing the number of tourists visiting Israel, says Minister Avraham Hirchson. The Italian market is an important one and a priority for this ministry.

Between January and October of this year, about 60,000 Italian tourists visited Israel, a rise of 75 per cent compared to the same period last year. According to ministry officials, Italian tourism to Israel is expected to rise 30 per cent by the end of 2005, and the number of religious pilgrims from that country is estimated to increase three-fold.
