The tourists that entered Israel in the first month of the year reached 134,000, 16 per cent more than in January 2005, 42 per cent more than in 2004, 83 per cent more than in January 2003, 92 per cent more than January 2002 and 31 per cent more than in January 2001.

Israel`s Tourism Minister Avraham Hirchson says his goal of attracting three million tourists to the country in 2006 will lead to the creation of thousands of jobs and spur economic growth. Tourism created 16,000 jobs in Israel in 2005, according to the minister.



Statistics show that 110,000 tourists arrived by air in January (up 15 per cent), 23,700 via land crossings (up 25 per cent) and 200 via sea ports.
