Nico Stam new chairman Maastricht Convention Bureau

Next to being Deputy Director of the Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus, Nico Stam is responsible for the business development activities on the Maastricht campus.

MAASTRICHT – Nico Stam, Deputy Director of Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus & Chief Business Officer, has joined the board of the Maastricht Convention Bureau. He is the new independent chairman. The Maastricht Convention Bureau is a foundation which promotes Maastricht & region as destination for multiple day (inter)national conventions, especially in the field of Health & Materials.

Next to being Deputy Director of the Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus, Nico Stam is responsible for the business development activities on the Maastricht campus. He has over 25 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, where he had various executive positions in the field of business development, strategy and Merger & Acquisition at respectively Merck & Co., Schering-Plough and Organon Biosciences. In these positions he worked closely with international Venture Capital companies and he had board and management functions at various Life Sciences organisations.

At Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus, he is actively involved in set-up and start-up companies and attracting external innovative life science companies to the campus and the Limburg region. In doing so, he closely works with other regional stakeholders, such as the Province of Limburg, Maastricht University, academic hospital, LED and the other Brightlands campuses. Nico’s activities are aimed on developing the Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus into an internationally leading innovation hub and ecosystem, which appeals to innovative start-ups and larger companies in the field of life sciences.

Nico studies chemistry/biochemistry at the Vrije Universiteit van Amsterdam and he has a PhD van de Vrije Universiteit, as well as an MBA and CLP.

The Maastricht Convention Bureau is very pleased with these developments. Managing Director Jurgen Moors: “The Maastricht region has an excellent ecosystem for medical conferences. Research, education and entrepreneurship come together at the health campus. As a result, there is a strong international power of attraction toward companies, institutions and scientists wanting to gain and share knowledge. The relevant alliance between the Maastricht Health Campus and our Bureau consolidates the position of Maastricht as a conference destination. Thanks to the fact that Nico Stam joined the board, with his service record and experience within the medical sector, there is a solid anchoring of science and especially Brightlands within the Maastricht Convention Bureau.”

Nico’s reasons for joining the board as independent chairman are clear: “With the intention the realisation of the ambition to develop the Brightlands campuses to innovative clusters which can easily cope with the competition with other science parks in the world, it is important that all the components are present in the required ecosystem. The Maastricht Convention Bureau to me is such a crucial partner in the ecosystem and contributes to the realisation of an international network with scientists and research institutes from abroad. The Maastricht Convention Bureau is very active on the international convention market and focuses among other things to attracting international medical and scientific conferences to Maastricht. Next to that, they organise many scientific conferences for the shareholders of the campus, Maastricht University and academic hospital.

The visits of these scientific visitors and the international cooperations which often result from this, I think are very important. A convention bureau does more than just organise a conference, it also offers a network with like-minded parties which have the same goal, attracting visitors and developing of economic activity in the Maastricht region, such as offering high quality hotels for visitors of a scientific conference, or another event such as the annual TEFAF.

By joining the board of the Maastricht Convention Bureau, the existing cooperation is being strengthened, and an even better equalisation can take place with regional parties which benefit from attracting conference to Maastricht. This way, we gain an even better position as a conference destination against the worldwide competition.”
