Sizzling start to summer for Budapest Airport

Delivering growth rates exceeding an average of 12%, this period of development will be sustained by a plethora of new routes in S15, including: Toronto, Montreal, Beijing, Hurghada, Maastricht, Glasgow, Bologna and Alghero.

Already on course to surpass early forecast expectations of 9.6 million passengers, Budapest Airport is experiencing exceptional passenger numbers during the first months of 2015.

Delivering growth rates exceeding an average of 12%, this period of development will be sustained by a plethora of new routes in S15, including: Toronto, Montreal, Beijing, Hurghada, Maastricht, Glasgow, Bologna and Alghero.


Launching its 15th route from Budapest, Ryanair’s four-times weekly service to Athens was welcomed by Budapest Airport’s Head of Airline Development, Balazs Bogats (second left) with a traditional celebratory cake presented to the crew.

Alongside these new services, the Hungarian gateway has kicked off summer by launching five new routes in the very first week. Vueling returned with a new link to Rome, while also resuming its Barcelona service–both thrice-weekly; SAS commenced a four-times weekly service to Stockholm Arlanda; Wizz Air’s inaugural flight from Lisbon was welcomed; Ryanair’s four-times weekly service to Athens began on 1 April; and new airline Air Croatia’s link to Zagreb was recently.


Meeting considerable demand for more flights between the Swedish and Hungarian capitals, SAS’ inaugural flight from Stockholm Arlanda launched on 29 March. The new route was celebrated and met by Sandor Saly, Airline Development Manager, Budapest Airport (holding the cake).

Budapest Airport Zrt. is the operator of Budapest Airport. It is owned by an international consortium of investors, led by the privately-owned German company AviAlliance, an independent airport manager holding a 52.66% stake, together with Caisse de depotet placement du Quebec (20.17%), Malton Investment Pte Ltd. (22.17%) and KfW IPEX-Bank GmbH (5%).

Supporting the advancement of its home -base, Wizz Air began a twice-weekly service to Lisbon, on the same day as announcing a further two new links to Bologna and Glasgow to launch in June.

To launch:

  • Air China four-times weekly service to Beijing, starting 1 May 2015
  • Wizz Air four-times weekly service to Maastricht, starting 15 May 2015
  • Wizz Air once-weekly service to Hurghada, starting 16 May 2015
  • SkyGreece Airlines twice-weekly service to Toronto, starting 22 May 2015
  • Iberia and Iberia Express seven-times services to Madrid, starting 2 June 2015
  • Wizz Air twice-weekly service to Bologna, starting 5 June 2015
  • Wizz Air twice-weekly service to Glasgow, starting 13 June 2015
  • Wizz Air twice-weekly service to Alghero, starting 15 June 2015
  • Air Transat weekly service to Montreal-Toronto, starting 18 June 2015.
