The most expensive New Year’s Eve destinations in the world

Cancun (Mexico) was the most expensive New Year’s Eve destination in the world, according to CheapHotels.org. Dubai is the second and third comes Miami Beach.

Spending New Year’s Eve in Miami Beach will cost overnight guests more than anywhere else in the United States. CheapHotels.org came to this determination after conducting a survey of the world’s most expensive destinations.

In coming up with the rankings, the survey specifically looked at the cheapest available double room for 30 major destinations around the world. It used the time period beginning December 30, 2015 and ending January 2, 2016 (3 nights) to compare the locales. Hotels lacking a central location, those with less than a 3-star rating and those with a negative overall average guest evaluation were excluded from consideration.

To spend New Year’s in Miami Beach, overnighters can expect to pay $286 nightly for the most affordable room. When the price for the same room on a non-holiday night in Florida’s popular resort city is compared to that rate, the difference equates to nearly a 300% price hike.

Overall, Miami comes in third in the world for New Year’s Eve. Beating it are two destination outside of the United States. The United Arab Emirates’ largest city, Dubai, snags the second spot at $302 per night. Taking the top spot is Mexico’s famous beach resort, Cancun. A nightly rate of $311 puts it in the number one position on the survey.

The second most expensive U.S. destination behind Miami Beach is Los Angeles. It ranks fourth priciest overall on the survey at a nightly rate of $272. The least expensive locales in which to spend New Year’s Eve among the destinations considered are Shanghai, China and Colombia’s capital, Bogota. There overnight guests this year end should find a room for less than $50 per night.

The following table compares 30 destinations in the world for New Year’s Eve. The rates indicated reflect the nightly price for the cheapest available double room for the period spanning December 30 to January 2. Only hotels with a central location, rated at least 3 stars and possessing a positive average client rating have been considered. A comparison with regular rates is shown in brackets. The percentage changes reflect the difference from the nightly rate for the most affordable double room during the January 13–16, 2016 time period.
