Transaero Airlines continues to implement its iPad Electronic Flight Bag Programme

Utilizing the experience accumulated by pilots who used iPads, Transaero entered a new phase of the programme – implementing EFB Class 2, which allows the crew to only use electronic documents during a flight.

MOSCOW – Transaero Airlines made another important step in the implementation of its Electronic Flight Bag programme at based on advanced iPad technological solutions.

Utilizing the experience accumulated by pilots who used iPads, Transaero entered a new phase of the programme – implementing EFB Class 2, which allows the crew to only use electronic documents during a flight.

In September 2013, Transaero became the first passenger airline in Russia to be granted an operational permit to use iPads as Electronic Flight Bags – EFB Class 1 – by the Federal Air Transport Agency.

Pilots will be able to track real-time aircraft locations on interactive route maps and airport layouts on the screen of the iPad connected to aircraft systems through a special interface unit. The crew will be able to use iPads throughout the duration of the entire flight thanks to a powered docking station developed for the cockpit.

To implement this phase of the programme Transaero has purchased 1,200 iPad Air tablets to give to each pilot employed by the company.

By implementing advanced corporate iPad solutions for crews Transaero aims to:

  • optimize the company’s technological processes by fully converting to electronic documents;
  • enhance fuel efficiency by reducing the weight of documentation transported and producing better flight plans and meteorological data;
  • enhance working conditions for the crew by reducing the time needed for searching and retrieving required documentation from the electronic library, decreasing the amount of human resources required for carrying out standard procedures.

All Transaero pilots will be able to use their personal iPad off duty during their free time for long distance learning, contacting the company through the corporate email and corporate website.

Access to the resources and data updates is provided via Wi-Fi connection at all preflight facilities of Transaero hub airports, via LTE and 3G networks everywhere across Russia, via Wi-Fi on board aircraft fitted with internet connection and at hotels when crews arrive abroad.

The EFB implementation programme has been developed and carried out by the Flight Navigation Service department with the support of the Information Security department and Technical department of Transaero Airlines. Transaero partnered up with Boeing, Jeppesen, AirWatch, reStore and MegaFon for the project.
