The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA), Alliance Against Fraud in Telemarketing and Electronic Commerce (AAFTEC), which is coordinated by the National Consumers League, will host the 2005 Conference on Travel Fraud and Consumer Protection in the National Press Club`s First Amendment Lounge on March 29, 2005.

The conference will cover topics such as booking travel online, consumer rights when things go wrong during travel, hot fraud areas and a look at what protection states extend to consumers.

This conference will provide a unique opportunity for consumers to see what types of travel scams are out there and measures they can take to protect themselves, said ASTA President and CEO Kathy Sudeikis, CTC. We have an excellent group of industry representatives who will be giving us an inside-the-industry perspective on these important issues.

Whether you`re shopping for travel services by phone or online, your dream vacation could turn out to be a bad trip if you`re not dealing with a legitimate company, said AAFTEC Coordinator Susan Grant.

Our mission is to increase public awareness about how to guard against travel scams and other types of fraud.

Speakers include keynote speaker Eileen Harrington, Associate Director of Marketing Practices, Federal Trade Commission; J.R. Kelly, Director, Florida Division of Consumer Services; Kyo Dolan, Special Agent, Electronic Crimes Task Force, U.S. Secret Service; Keith Bellows, Editor-in-Chief, National Geographic Traveler; Steve Salter, Director of Online Activities, Council of Better Business Bureaus; Noelle Nachtsheim, Director of Law Enforcement Services, National Fraud Information Center/Internet Fraud Watch, National Consumers League; Kathy Sudeikis, CTC, ASTA President and CEO; John Frenaye, President, Carlson Wagonlit-Arnold, Md.; and Susan Tanzman, President, Martin`s Travel and Tours, Los Angeles, Calif.
