New state-of-the-art ferry terminal opens today in New York’s Battery Park City

A new state-of-the-art ferry terminal will open on the Battery Park City promenade at 6 am (New York time) on Wednesday, March 18, providing thousands of ferry commuters with improved amenities designed to encourage greater use of this trans-Hudson transportation option.

The new terminal, with a construction cost of $50 million, will replace an existing ferry terminal at Battery Park City that first opened in 1990. The Port Authority will own the terminal, and BillyBey Ferry Company will operate and maintain it.

The new Battery Park City ferry terminal will provide:

  • Five ferry slips that will accept both side and bow-loading vessels;
  • A larger 22,000-square-foot passenger waiting area to reduce passenger crowding; and
  • Improved amenities, such as gangway separations for arriving and departing passengers, restrooms, concession kiosk, additional seating and improved lighting.

The Battery Park City Ferry Terminal now handles 6,100 weekday passenger trips. The new terminal is expected to handle increased ridership from the completed Goldman Sachs building in Battery Park City and the World Trade Centre site.

The new terminal was the recipient of the “2008 Public Works Project of the Year” by New York Construction Magazine.
