Royal Caribbean Cruises has been selected as one of the top workplaces for information technology (IT) professionals. The recognition came from IDG`s Computerworld, a weekly IT publication, in its 11th annual Best Places to Work survey.

Royal Caribbean ranked number one in the publication`s Tour and Travel category and number 13 in overall selections. Since 1994, Computerworld`s annual Best Places to Work survey has ranked the top 100 work environments for technology professionals, based on a comprehensive questionnaire regarding company offerings in categories such as benefits, diversity, career development, training, and retention. Additionally, Computerworld surveyed more than 17,000 IT workers, whose responses factored heavily in determining the rankings.

We are truly honored to be selected as one of the best places to work in IT, said Mike Sutten, chief information officer for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Our company`s ongoing commitment to employee development and the involvement of our office in all aspects of our operations continues to pay great dividends.

Royal Caribbean was cited for its unique approach to training and development, including a career banding structure that offers parallel and dual career path opportunities for senior level technical employees and management. The company`s IT office maintains a continuous improvement team, comprised of a cross-section of IT staff, that meets regularly as a clearinghouse for departmental enrichment ideas and project suggestions.

The company also was praised for the diversity of both its IT management team and workforce, as well as its unique leadership development program, entitled Lead-IT, and its employee cruise benefit program.

We were tremendously gratified by the reader response to our `Best Places to Work` survey this year, which was 30% higher and represents the views of more than 17,000 technology professionals, said Maryfran Johnson, editor in chief of Computerworld. The most-desired benefits have remained consistent in recent years. IT pros still want access to leading-edge technologies, training, and flexible work schedules. But our Best Places companies often go beyond those measures to provide much deeper levels of job fulfillment.
