Record Number Of Tourists On Rhodes
A record number of tourists arrived on the southeastern Aegean island of Rhodes during the first week of August, and a further increase is expected, according to the Hellenic Tourism Organization (EOT).
Official data collected by the organization show that 82,953 tourists enjoyed holidays on the island, compared to 77,441 during the same period last year, with a barrage of charter flights expected up until the end of the month.
Of the above total arrivals, a mere 4,729 were domestic holidaymakers – a decline from last year’s 5,348 from the 77,441 total. The reason sited for the decline was poor ferryboat service and last minute planning on the part of Greek tourists.
This seven per cent increase includes tourists staying in lodging units with official permits from the tourism organization. However, because of the large number of “other” lodgings available in rented rooms and apartments, unofficial data indicate that the number of tourists vacationing on Rhodes during the first week in August exceed 120,000.
