Tourist beds plentiful in southern Aegean

Greece's islands in the southern Aegean have Europe's highest ratio of hotel beds to citizens, according to a study carried out by the EU's statistics agency.



More specifically, there are 550 beds for every 100 residents in the Cyclades and Dodecanese, while there are 11 beds for every 1,000 citizens in western Macedonia.



Spain's Balearic islands have the highest ratio after its regional competitor Greece, with 348 beds for evert 1,000 residents, followed by Italy's winter resort Trentino-Alto Adige (262:1,000), Portugal's Algarve (245:1,000) and Austria's Tirolo (330:1,000).



In 1998, the EU average was 25 beds for every 1,000 citizens.
