It is estimated that some 25 percent of all agents would eventually go out of business due to the inroads of Internet travel, it was announced at the E-mail Travel World Conference held in San Francisco.

As of June 1999, there were 32.500 travel agencies in the USA, according to the American Society of Travel Agents, ASTA.

It was reported that a full 73 percent of all travel is still booked through traditional travel agencies, with only four percent currently booked on the Internet.
