With the rapid growth of tourism, the scale of tourism industry in China has continued to expand.
By the end of 2002, there are altogether 293, 800 tourist enterprises and institutions in China which include:
- Tourist accommodation Facilities numbering 276.000 (including 8.900 star- rated hotels, 84.000 collectively- owned guest- rooms, and 180.000 privately- owned guest- rooms).
- Among the Star- rated Hotels, there are 175 five- star hotels, 635 four- star- hotels, 2.846 three- star hotels, 4.414 two- star hotels and 810 one- star hotels with a total of 816.000 hotel rooms.
- Travel- services number 11.615. Including 1.358 international travel services and 10.257.
- Major Tourist Scenic Area (Spot) number 3.409, and there are 1.062 A- class ones, including 362 Four- A class, 164 Three- A class, 463 Two- A class and 73 One- A class.
- Tourist Coach and Cruise Companies number 107.
- Total Tourism Fixed Assets value 823.8 billion RMB Yuan including 690.2 billion for tourist accommodation facilities, taking 84%, 41.2 billion for travel services, taking 5%, 92.4 billion for tourist coach and cruise companies and other tourist working units, taking 11%.
- Total Number of Personnel Employed in the tourism industry reaches 36.73 million among which 6.13 million are directly employed and 30.6 million indirectly employed. Over 150.000 people have been issued Tour Guide Qualification Certificate and about 87.000 of them have registered to work in various travel services. There are 137 Best Tourist Cities in China
