Travel interest to national parks drops dramatically since government shutdown

Interest down 62% in Jackson, WY; 52% in Yellowstone; 25% in Yosemite.

DUSSELDORF, GERMANY – Since the government shutdown, now in its 15th day, travel interest to many popular US tourist destinations (particularly to national parks) has decreased significantly. When comparing the 14 days leading up to the shutdown and the 14 days since, interest has fallen 62% in Jackson, WY; 52% in Yellowstone, 25% in Yosemite; 33% in Moab, UT and 14% in Grand Canyon Valley. A 15% decrease in travel interest to Washington D.C. is also reported. Other major US cities see little to no change.  These are the findings of hotel search trivago.com.

Favorite travel destinations in the US are feeling the effects of the government shutdown, now entering its third week. The largest decreases in travel interest are seen in the country’s beloved national parks. Of the destinations examined, Jackson, WY (a major gateway for those heading to Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park) sees the biggest drop in travel interest (-62%), followed by Yellowstone (-52%) and Gettysburg  (-41%; home to Gettysburg National Military Park). Yosemite (-25%) and the Grand Canyon (-14%) also see considerable drops.

US cities remain resilient; largest effect seen in Washington D.C.
San Francisco, New York City and Las Vegas see minor to negligible decreases in travel interest since the government shutdown, according to trivago’s data – with 5%, 3% and 1% decreases, respectively. Washington D.C is the metropolitan area in the US that shows the greatest drop of -15%.

Travel interest to other metropolitan destinations in the US has remained stable since the shutdown, even increasing in Boston (up 12%), Philadelphia (up 7%) and New Orleans (up 1%).
