Generation Z go mad for Madeira, Malta and Marrakesh

Holiday destinations popularised by previous generations are back in vogue, says Inspired Luxury Escapes.

Overseas destinations that were renowned holiday hotspots for previous generations are making a comeback, according to Inspired Luxury Escapes.

Booking figures from Inspired Luxury Escapes, the experts in handpicked luxury holidays, show destinations such as Marrakech and Malta that were visited by trendsetters in the 1960s or 70s are becoming popular among a new, younger audience, with a 180% increase in year-on-year bookings for Madeira and bookings to Malta doubling in the past 12 months.

Paul Constable, General Manager of Inspired Luxury Escapes, says: “When it comes to travelling, every generation likes to think they’ve broken new ground, but our figures show many people are following in their parents’ – and grandparents’ – footsteps and re-discovering some of the fabulous destinations previous generations flocked to.

And, with some fantastic special offers for September and October, there’s never been a better time to visit.”

Key destinations that are back in vogue include:

Madeira
Inspired Luxury Escapes is reporting a 180% increase in year-on-year bookings for Madeira, which has been a popular destination for nearly 70 years. Former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and husband Dennis honeymooned here in 1951, returning 50 years later to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. Known as the ‘floating garden’ for its abundance of botanical and tropical flowers and long renowned for its annual New Year celebrations featuring the largest fireworks show in the world, Madeira has developed into a popular golfing, fishing and diving destination.

Malta
A hugely popular tourist destination because of its warm climate, architectural and historical monuments, including nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites – one being the capital Valletta – Malta’s tourism took off in the 1970s, but dropped a decade later. It’s back with a vengeance, with Inspired Luxury Escapes seeing bookings double in the past 12 months.

Marrakech
Hugely popular in the 60s and 70s among the rock n roll fraternity, Marrakech’s spellbinding, heady mix of East and West, has seen a resurgence over the past three years and has overtaken Egypt as Inspired Luxury Escapes’ leading destination in North Africa.

Paul Constable added: “Marrakech’s incredible mosques and palaces, endless mazes of backstreets and souks and exclusive, opulent riads, combined with a relatively short flight from the UK make it a great place for a long weekend.”
