Sometimes unpleasant hotel experiences can put a put a strain on a vacation. The hotel price comparison site, trivago.co.uk asked its visitors in their latest survey what was the worst hotel experience they have encountered on holiday. The most common complaint was bugs in the room.

On average 82 percent of the overall respondents claimed to have had a bad hotel experience on holiday. This is the conclusion of the latest trivago survey which was answered by 4,876 users from six trivago different nations in June 2009. Among the Brits the most common complaint was bugs in the room (22 percent). Ten percent stated that they had been in a room that was either unclean or had broken appliances, the same percentage complained about noisy neighbours. Surprisingly seven percent of British respondents declared that they got food poisoning from the hotel food; one percent ended up with chlorine poisoning from the pool.

In comparison to other European countries the Brits have the most complaints; only 14 percent stated they did not have any hotel issues whilst on holiday. The French travellers had the least complaints with 23% reporting they never had a bad hotel experience; the Dutch are a close second at 22%. The most wide spread problem was bugs in the room, with the Dutch (19 percent), German (19 percent), Spanish (17 percent), the French (15 percent) and the Italians (15 percent) all naming this the number one problem. Another big complaint in Spain (ten percent) and Germany (seven percent) was that no room was available upon arrival, despite booking in advance. Overall, one percent of respondents from each country got chlorine poisoning from the hotel pool.

The online survey ‘What was the worst hotel experience you had on holiday’ was answered by 4,876 visitors to trivago.co.uk, trivago.de, trivago.es, trivago.fr, trivago.it and trivago.nl throughout June 2009.
