America’s own Empire City reclaimed first place as most-popular destination for a winter break for Britons, for both long and short breaks, having been beaten to the top spot last year by Bangkok.

Famed worldwide for its unique Christmas spirit, The City that Never Sleeps is the location of many family holiday movies, such as Elf, Miracle on 34th Street and Scrooged. New York also is an excellent choice for Christmas shopping, with top department stores Macy’s, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue and Henri Bendel attracting savvy shoppers each year.

Next most-popular destination for Britons was Dubai, for both long and short breaks, with its guaranteed sunshine, luxurious hotels and relatively short mid-haul flight time.

And Lisbon, Portugal’s capital and largest city was third most-searched, for long and short breaks. Famed for its cross-section of culture and history, with Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and Postmodern architecture, the city is also a foodie’s heaven and home to many gourmet restaurants.

Lasse Skole Hansen, Spokesperson at momondo.co.uk states: “Many Brits choose to spend the holiday during Christmas and New Year in unfamiliar and exotic climes, and this year is no exception. The excitement of New York, where the holiday season is taken very seriously, can be wonderful for children and adults alike, in the run-up to Christmas and over New Year.

“Many Brits also utilise the many public holidays during Christmas and New Year to get away from the dark winter. This is why we see Dubai entering second. Some enjoy trips over this time to experience something different to the classic British Christmas – preferably warm, exotic or cultural, to start the New Year with renewed energy. Therefore, we see destinations such as Dubai, Bangkok, Bucharest and Amsterdam in our top tens,” states Hansen.
