Hidden gems of London

From sites you’ve never heard of to places filled with wonderful beauty, places to eat and the outright funny, below, you’ll find some of our favourites.

With lockdown easing, one of the saddest things we’ve read about is how elements of society such as the arts and tourism have been impacted hugely, and may not recover.

Surprisingly, this is as true for London as many other areas. But, with train travel starting again, now is a great time to visit London and see those secret gems it has hidden away from unsuspecting tourists.

From sites you’ve never heard of to places filled with wonderful beauty, places to eat and the outright funny, below, you’ll find some of our favourites.

The smallest police station
Sitting in Trafalgar Square, you may not believe us, but there’s a police station so small you may have missed it. No longer used, this was built as a way to monitor protests going on in the square and makes for a great snap.

The Candlelight Club
When visiting London, it’s best to stay away from the venues known to rinse visitors of their cash and opt for something a little different. This venue does just that. Offering 1920s prohibition-inspired partying in central London, this is the ideal place to dress up and experience some old school razzle-dazzle in the Big Smoke.

The seven noses
Known for its art and architecture, the seven noses are a little different. Dotted around Soho, you’ll find these seven pieces of art made by Rick Buckley, which make for an interesting hunt and an excellent photo album for Instagram.

Isabella plantation
If you’re looking for scenic beauty, head over to Richmond Park where you’ll find this stunning garden. A visual beauty unlike the stunning architecture associated with London, you’ll love walking around this unusually rural spot.

Chislehurst caves
Caves, in London? You must think we’re mad, but we’re not. Quite far from central London, this is located in Chislehurst and has been a venue for musical acts such as Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones. A fun, quirky thing to do that you wouldn’t normally consider doing in London.

Cockney cashpoint
You’re probably wondering what on earth this is. But, if you visit Commercial Road and Roman Road in East London, you’ll find this amazing cashpoint, which allows you to choose cockney as a language for something unique while performing a rather mundane task.

St Dunstan in the East
Refurbished several times since it was built between the 11th and 12th-centuries, this is one of the greatest hidden gems London has to offer.

A medieval church that was partially destroyed in WW2, this is a place of stunning architectural beauty and there’s even a pretty little garden. Just a 10-minute walk from Tower Bridge, this tranquil setting is a nice break from the otherwise busy city.

So, don’t delay, go and explore the parts of London you’d never heard of as soon as you can.
