Program implemented to counter taxi fare overcharges

An initiative to inform visitors on the average taxi fare to popular points was announced recently by the Hermes taxi drivers' association, which is based in Thessaloniki, the country's northern capital. The initiative came after a number of unscrupulous drivers were found to be overcharging tourists.
As of today, a large map of northern Greece is on display in the area's Macedonia International Airport. The map shows the major cities, ports, archaeological sites and border posts, along with the distances in kilometers from Thessaloniki. Next to the destinations are the average taxi fares from the city to these points.
The Hermes taxi<.> association said it created the map in cooperation with authorities from the Thessaloniki prefecture as part of an effort to counter gross overcharging by a handful of taxi drivers.
The move is also part of an overall campaign by the Thessaloniki prefecture, and the Hellenic National Tourism Organization, to boost tourism to the capital and to northern Greece in general.
Presenting the map at a news conference in Thessaloniki, the association's president, Paris Kissas, said that his association would propose the Greek transport ministry adopt a similar map initiative in other major cities, especially Athens.
