Katowice Airport handled 1 million passengers in a single calendar year for the first time in 2005. 2 million travellers were served in 2008, 3 million in 2015, and 4 million in 2018.
On 3 November 2023, the five millionth passenger in a single calendar year was handled for the first time in the history of Katowice Airport. Aleksandra was the lucky passenger; she came to Katowice Airport from Dortmund (Germany) on board of Wizz Air‘s Airbus A320.
The five millionth passenger received numerous gifts. The Upper Silesian Aviation Group (GTL SA), the company managing Katowice Airport, gave a voucher allowing for single free use of the Business Lounge, Fast Track and car park. Wizz Air gave a coupon allowing to buy tickets for flights offered by the carrier. A set of gifts was also offered by Baltona SA.
“We welcome the five millionth passenger in a single calendar year for the first time in the history of the airport. It’s an important moment for the development of Katowice Airport. I’m glad that it happened on Wizz Air’s flight, especially since in May 2024 we will be celebrating 20 years of the first commercial flight in the history of Wizz Air, which happened to take place at our airport. 2023 will be record-breaking for Katowice Airport; we will conclude it with a great result, i.e. 5.5 million passengers. The forecast for next week estimates that we will improve this result; we are expecting 6 million passengers. I wish to thank everyone for travelling via the Katowice Airport network of regular and charter flights,” said Artur Tomasik, the President of the Board of the Upper Silesian Aviation Group.

The passenger traffic forecasts for Katowice Airport assume a big growth of passenger traffic. GTL SA estimates that even 7.5 million passengers may travel via Katowice Airport’s network in 2028, while 10 million travellers will be handled in approx. 2033.
Due to the forecast growth of traffic, GTL SA has prepared an investment programme, whose realisation will conclude in 2030. Its main goal is to improve throughput and the standard of terminal and parking infrastructure. Among the most important planned investments is the construction of a main passenger terminal with jet bridges, connected with the train station via a tunnel, construction of a new multimodal interchange station between the station and the new terminal, and construction of new road system with kiss&fly area. Expansion of car parks, and construction of a multi-storey car park, is also scheduled.
