The international dimension of Cluj Airport’s operations is underscored by the fact that 92% of its traffic last year was international, with only a minimal 8% accounting for domestic flights.

AVIATION EVENT – CLUJ – REPORT: Cluj International Airport in Romania is at the forefront of a transformative era, earmarked by significant expansions and an impressive surge in passenger traffic. With a strategic extension of the departure terminal exceeding 7,000 square meters, Cluj Airport is not just expanding its physical footprint; it is significantly enhancing its capacity to accommodate the growing demand for air travel. This development is a testament to the airport’s commitment to elevating the travel experience and its readiness to handle an increasing volume of passengers with efficiency and ease.

According to Dr. David Ciceo, Managing Director Cluj International Airport, during the Aviation Event press conference yesterday, the past year has been a milestone for Cluj Airport, with passenger numbers reaching 3.2 million, surpassing the figures recorded in 2019. This growth trajectory is not only a sign of recovery but also an indicator of the airport’s burgeoning role in the global travel network. The forecast for the upcoming years remains optimistic, with expectations of continued growth. This upward trend underscores the critical need for the recent expansions, ensuring that Cluj Airport remains a key player in the travel and hospitality industry.

Enhanced facilities for Schengen and non-Schengen flights

A pivotal development for Cluj Airport, and indeed for Romania, is the inclusion into the Schengen Area, slated for March 31. This integration will significantly streamline the travel process for passengers, eliminating the need for ID or passport checks for approximately 70% of passengers traveling within the Schengen Area, while maintaining efficient processes for the remaining 30% from non-Schengen countries. The distinction between Schengen and non-Schengen flights will introduce greater operational flexibility and improve the overall passenger experience.

The international dimension of Cluj Airport’s operations is underscored by the fact that 92% of its traffic last year was international, with only a minimal 8% accounting for domestic flights. This dominance of international traffic highlights Cluj Airport’s critical role as a gateway to Romania from the global stage, offering extensive connectivity and facilitating international commerce and tourism.

Substantial investments in infrastructure and services

The transformation of Cluj Airport is underpinned by substantial investments exceeding 140 million euros, with significant contributions from European and state funds. These investments have been judiciously allocated towards enhancing safety, security, and passenger services. The imminent unveiling of new conditions for departure at the end of May or by the latest June promises to mark the culmination of these efforts, showcasing the airport’s commitment to providing superior facilities and services.

The extension and upgrades at Cluj Airport are much more than infrastructural developments; they represent a strategic advancement in the travel and hospitality sector, promising enhanced efficiency, connectivity, and passenger satisfaction. As Cluj Airport embarks on this new era, it stands as a testament to the dynamism and resilience of the travel and hospitality industry, ready to meet the evolving demands of global travelers and cementing its position as a pivotal hub in the European travel network.
