Airbnb: Fostering responsible travel through our ground rules for guests

Targeted education provided to more than 50,000 guests globally since late June alone.

The majority of guests on Airbnb are considerate travelers who treat Hosts’ homes like their own and respect the neighborhoods in which they’re staying. Nevertheless, our team is always working hard to help ensure each stay is a positive experience for Hosts, guests and neighborhoods.

As part of this effort, Airbnb has rolled out a comprehensive set of ground rules for guests that aim to provide greater clarity for travelers on our expectations to treat Hosts and homes with respect, and additional peace of mind for Hosts. These ground rules cover issues like cleanliness, noise, damage, smoking, and approved guests, among others. We believe these standards can help make stays more enjoyable for both parties, as well as foster a greater sense of connection.

“Since late June alone, we’ve provided reactive guidance and education to more than 50,000 guests globally as part of our efforts to enforce these ground rules. This guidance aims to help guests make use of constructive feedback from their Hosts and avoid more serious issues in the future. In cases where we receive reports of repeated or severe violations of our ground rules by a guest, actions we can take include suspension or removal from our platform.” the company says.

“Our efforts to enforce our ground rules for guests build on our recent work to promote positive experiences on Airbnb, including the introduction of transparent check-out instructions, total price display and removing or suspending thousands of listings through our hosting quality system. This hosting quality system continues to provide Hosts with actionable guidance about how they can improve, and when repeated or severe violations of our ground rules for Hosts are reported, listings may be removed from the platform.”

“Our teams continuously look for ways to support our community to have great stays,” said Tara Bunch, Airbnb’s Global Head of Operations. “While issues are rare, we believe clear standards are an important part of helping to set expectations and to promote positive experiences for Hosts, guests and neighborhoods.”

Airbnb is committed to working together with Hosts, guests, governments and communities to promote responsible travel that is both socially and economically empowering.
