Hotel prices up 48% in Boston on St. Patrick’s Day, 98% for SXSW in Austin

This month, the hotel industries in many of the country’s largest cities may be pleased to know that hotel rates have increased dramatically this March (from March 2013)—by an average of 12%, while 8 of the 25 see a gain of over 15%.

Those looking to book a hotel on the last weekend of the South By Southwest festival in Austin, TX (March 14–16, 2014) should expect to pay 98% more than they normally would in the state’s musical capital. Hotel prices of the top 25 U.S. cities examined in the tHPI are up this month by an average 12% from March of 2013. From March 2012 to March 2013, prices in the same cities increased by only 1.5% over the year. Average nightly rates have increased in Boston by 48% for the night of St. Patrick’s Day. These are the findings of the trivago Hotel Price Index produced monthly by hotel search trivago.com.
 
Las Vegas hotel rates up 33% from last March
This month, the hotel industries in many of the country’s largest cities may be pleased to know that hotel rates have increased dramatically this March (from March 2013)—by an average of 12%, while 8 of the 25 see a gain of over 15%. To compare, the average year-over-year growth seen in the same 25 cities from 2012 to 2013 was 1.5%. The strongest growth is visible in Las Vegas ($161/night this month, up 33% from last March’s price, $121/night). Other cities seeing exceptionally strong Y-O-Y growth include Denver ($166/night, up 27% from March 2013), New Orleans ($227, up 23%), and Washington D.C. ($304/night, up 19%). Austin hotel rates up 98% for final weekend of SXSW
Looking to snatch up a last-minute hotel room in Austin for the final weekend of SXSW? Be wary that prices are up to an average $310/night on Friday (a 98% increase from the hotel price average in the Texan capital). On Saturday, they drop to $275/night and on Sunday when the crowds move out, they decrease to $185/night.

St. Patrick’s Day – Rates up 48% in Boston
For the Irish holiday, the average nightly hotel price in Boston reaches $374 on Monday, March 17th, which represents a 48% price increase from the nightly rate on the following Monday ($252). Similarly, prices are up 23% in Chicago on the night of holiday ($216 from $175) and 10% in Manhattan ($343 from $312 the following Monday).
