The reimagined historic accommodations draw inspiration from the former ghost town’s Western heritage and the iconic American West.

DUNTON, CO – Dunton Destinations, the renowned hospitality brand known for its destination resorts and homes around the world, unveils the new Major Ross cabin accommodations at Dunton Hot Springs, the award-winning Relais & Chateaux resort in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. Major Ross was re-designed by celebrated architecture and interior design firm Waldo Works and features interiors rooted in the spirit of the Old West while paying homage to the region’s rich heritage and history.

“We are thrilled to introduce this beautiful cabin renovation, which is a testament to our commitment to preserving history and delivering an unparalleled guest experience,” said Christina Rossi of Dunton Destinations. “By thoughtfully infusing the cabin with Western heritage elements and paying tribute to the local legacy, Waldo Works has helped us create a space that effortlessly combines comfort, authenticity, and luxury.”

The highlight of the renovation is the meticulous reorientation of the cabin layout, seamlessly aligning it with the historic, simple structure that has stood the test of time since the late 1800s. As part of this endeavor, the old bathroom was converted into a mudroom, creating a more functional space. In its place, a larger, more opulent bathroom was added to the back, featuring direct outside access to the source hot spring pool through a new outdoor shower, ensuring a rejuvenating guest experience.

Waldo Works took inspiration from denim upholstery, cowboy shirt-inspired leather detailing, and a faded red, white, and blue color palette to capture the authentic Western vibe. The attention to detail is evident in the woven rope-inspired stitching meticulously crafted on focal items such as the rug and bedspread, complementing the antique lassos and rope decorating the cabin’s wall.

The bathroom boasts hand-dipped tile panels inspired by settlers’ quilt patterns sourced from the esteemed American Folk Museum collection archive. The bathtub showcases a unique design reminiscent of a barrel, enveloped in carefully crafted boarding. At the same time, the vanity is meant to remind guests of a robust saloon door and invite guests to step into a bygone era.

The renovation of Major Ross showcases Dunton’s dedication to maintaining the charm and character of historic structures while infusing them with contemporary elegance.
