HomeToGo releases 2022 Memorial Day Travel Forecast

Search demand data from HomeToG signals busy Memorial Day travel weekend ahead; Travelers booking longer stays farther from home with bigger groups.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. – HomeToGo has combed through its extensive database of travel behavior to release its 2022 Memorial Day Travel Forecast, sharing insights on travel trends for the holiday weekend. With the unofficial kickoff to summer on the horizon, Memorial Day travelers are gearing up to hit the road and skies by seeking vacation rentals in major cities and coastal areas – and HomeToGo has seen search demand for the weekend increase by 106% compared to 2021. Travelers are also planning longer trips compared to last year’s holiday, as HomeToGo’s data finds that the average length of stay for stays occurring over Memorial Day is 8.5 days (+26% vs. 2021).

“As restrictions lessen and consumer confidence grows, Americans are eager to spend time together and travel to their favorite cities and beaches this Memorial Day,” said Caroline Burns, Head of PR and Travel Expert at HomeToGo. “Pent-up demand means we’re seeing travelers searching for longer stays at vacation rentals over the holiday, opting for both city trips and faraway international stays – a strong indicator for a busy summer season ahead as travel rebounds.”

Based on an analysis of its search and booking data, HomeToGo identified the following major travel trends in its 2022 Memorial Day Travel Forecast:

  • Long weekend trips continue to get longer: According to HomeToGo’s booking data for stays with check-in during Memorial Day weekend, the average length of stay is 8.5 days, an increase of more than 26% compared to 2021.
  • Travelers are heading further from home: The average distance from home for travelers searching for vacation rentals on HomeToGo is 781 miles (+15% vs 2021). HomeToGo is also seeing an increase in demand for international destinations, as the number of searches on HomeToGo.com for vacation rentals outside the U.S. has increased by 15% compared to last Memorial Day weekend.
  • Travelers are opting for coastal getaways and city trips: HomeToGo data shows a 106% increase in demand for vacation rentals in major cities and coastal regions from travelers hoping to enjoy this year’s holiday weekend celebrations and festivities.    
  • Memorial Day travelers planned ahead: The average time between booking and check-in for Memorial Day trips is over 3 months, which is 38% longer compared to last year (97 days compared to 70 days in 2021).
  • Travelers’ group size is increasing: Travelers are eager to reconnect with friends and family, as the average group size over Memorial Day is 5.7 guests (+25% vs. 2021).
