Israeli Tourism Minister Avraham Hirchson: Every effort will be made to establish direct flights between Israel and South America.

250 Brazilian tourists, most pilgrims, arrived at Tel Aviv`s international airport aboard the first in a series of seven direct charter flights from that country. The flights, operated by Genesis Tours, will continue until late March.

Israeli Tourism Ministry officials say by shortening the flight time between Israel and Brazil from 22 to 14 hours, eliminating the need for stopovers in Europe and the resulting lowering of airfares between the two countries will significantly boost Brazilian tourism to Israel, particular pilgrimage by Evangelical Christian groups.

Minister of Tourism Avraham Hirchson says the ministry is concentrating much effort in South America, and Brazil in particular. These are priority areas, according to the minister.

In the first ten months of 2005, approximately 17,000 Brazilian tourists arrived in Israel, 76 per cent more than in the same period last year.
