BAA’s Terminal 5 is travel agents choice

Terminal 5 has picked up an award from the people who really know all about airports – the country’s travel industry professionals. Heathrow’s newest terminal scooped a Travel Agents Choice Award for best airport, beating off competition from Gatwick, Leeds Bradford and Manchester.

The Travel Agents Choice Awards recognise and reward the travel industry’s star performers and are voted for by readers of some of the leading travel trade training magazines, including Selling Long Haul, Selling Short Breaks & Holidays, Travel Uni and Selling Cruising.

Voting in the awards ran high this year with an extensive line up of tour operators, tourism boards, destinations, airlines and airports, cruise lines, hotels and resorts all competing for the titles.

Opened in 2008, Heathrow’s Terminal 5 was designed with the passenger experience in mind and now handles around 25 million passengers a year. The building scores highly in the independent, international Airport Service Quality survey of passenger opinions, maintaining a leading position amongst European airports.

Collecting the award, BAA’s chief executive officer Colin Matthews said: "We are determined to make Heathrow an airport to be proud of, making it easier and more enjoyable for all. We are halfway through rebuilding the airport and passengers tell us they like what we are doing. More passengers now rate us "excellent" or "very good" than any other European hub airport but we still have a long way to go."

The Travel Agents Choice Awards managing director, Martin Steady, presenting the awards, said: "Travel agents are a discerning group of people with very exacting standards so those who ranked top in our awards can be truly proud of their achievements. It has been a hard year for the travel industry but the awards give us all something to celebrate. We sincerely congratulate all our winners and wish them every success in the coming year too."
