A TripAdvisor poll has revealed that the majority of Brits do not support striking airline cabin crew or their union. This comes as Unite, the union representing BA’s cabin crew members, today begins another strike ballot. A ‘yes’ vote would mean both the Easter and royal bank holidays could be affected by strikes.
Following several strikes in the last year, Britons are growing increasingly frustrated with the crippling travel disruptions. A TripAdvisor poll of almost 4,000 British travellers found fewer than one in five people (18%) support the union and airline cabin crew, the side threatening to strike. Airline management have the support of over half the nation (58%) while a further 22% support neither side.
Emma O’Boyle, TripAdvisor spokesperson comments: "The constant fear of a strike makes travel planning very difficult and there is understandable frustration. It’s been a tough 18 months for air travellers and the public evidently wants to see an end to this threat of uncertainty, particularly over key travel periods like Easter and the royal wedding."
The airline/cabin crew conflict began in October 2009 when BA announced plans for staff cuts and pay freezes. The battle has escalated to include a number of cabin crew strikes, although BA’s contingency plans have minimised flight cancellations.
