The former Eastern German Berlin Airport, Berlin-Schoenefeld, has celebrated last week the departure of their 3billion-th passenger. The lucky winner of a Germanwings flight ticket left the Berlin Airport on a Germanwings flight to Stuttgart.

Dr. Joachim Klein, General Manager of Germanwings, handed the surprised winner personally over an additional free flight ticket, when he arrived in the departure hall of Schoenefeld Airport.

In October 2003 Germanwings changed all departures from Berlin-Tegel to Berlin Schoenefeld, the airport which is going to be developed as a new major airport for the Brandenburg Region. Berlin City can easily be reached by the Airport Express within half an hour. The change of the Germanwings had initiated a number of other low cost airlines to change also to Schoenefeld.

“Germanwings has never regretted this decision”, Dr Klein stated. “The market has accepted the airport very well. Within one year more than 470.000 reservations have been made on our routes between Stuttgart and Berlin and Cologne and Berlin. The average seat load factor is around 85%”, he added.

Germanwings has increased flights since the beginning of November this year to three daily flights from Cologne to Berlin as well as three daily flights from Stuttgart to Berlin-Schoenefeld. Therefore travellers from Thessaloniki as well as from Athens can make use of these additional flights through the Germanwings destinations Cologne and Stuttgart at prices starting from 19,- € per route.
