Cyprus<.> and Greece have pledged to cooperate in the field of air transport following the signing of a memorandum in Nicosia.

The agreement was signed by the director of Cyprus` transport and works ministry, Vassos Pyrgos, and the director of air transport for Greece`s Civil Aviation Authority, Nikolaos Kavadas.

Pyrgos said he expected no restrictions on air transport would exist between the two countries by the end of 2001.

Under the terms of the memorandum, starting from November 1 this year a second carrier (apart from Olympic Airways) will be able to carry out scheduled flights at other Greek airports, besides those of Athens and Thessaloniki. The ministerial committee on air transport will consider a proposal for this date to be brought forward to June 1.

The agreement now allows for charter flights at all of Greece`s regional

airports.

Pyrgos stated that regular contacts will take place to ensure that air transport between Cyprus and Greece is fully liberalised as soon as possible. He said that in order to Greece and Cyprus must proceed quickly to create a common airspace so that we will be well prepared when it is time to enter the common European airspace.

Kavadas said the memorandum was significant because it represented a step towards the liberalisation of air transport between the Greek and Cypriot republics and would assist in efforts to increase air traffic from Greece to Cyprus.
