‘Ahoy 2020!’ Event planners can dive into the heart of Hamburg’s seafaring heritage with a virtual tour of the city‘s best maritime venues, brought to life by the team who know the city best – Hamburg Convention Bureau (HCB). HCB’s new online homestory showcases unique venues blending seafaring history, industry culture and maritime flair.
The first stop for the team is one of the largest event locations in Hamburg – former dockside shed number 52A (Schuppen 52). Formerly used to store spices, number 52a stands among cranes and ships in the historic Port. Centrally located, it can be reached quickly by both land and sea – including shuttle barges along the River Elbe.
At over 6,000 square metres, number 52a offers space for up to 3,000 guests, and thanks to a modern infrastructure, including IT networking and safety features, it can be transformed into a unique venue for conferences, exhibitions, large parties or gala dinners. For smaller events of up to 200 guests, its sister venue along the Elbe – the Jachthafen marina – fits the bill.
Delegates in Hamburg can walk the plank – literally – by boarding the cargo ship Bleichen. This historic vessel used to transport parcels to Scandinavia via the Baltic Sea and recently reopened as a museum and events space following restoration. Where wood, cocoa beans and peanuts were once stored, there’s now a one-of-a-kind event space for up to 200 people. The room can be tailored to fit any theme courtesy of local company Party Rent and groups of up to 20 guests can celebrate in style in the salon on the bridge deck, now restored to its former glory.
The Hafenmuseum Hamburg nestled among historic quay sheds covers 100 years of shipbuilding, seafaring, cargo handling and marine technology. The venue brings to life the story of Hamburg’s famous port as told by the people who spent their working lives in the harbour. The museum is a versatile event location for up to 400 delegates and, for events of up to 30 guests, the pilot’s cabin with its historic interior is the perfect place.
Outdoor events can be hosted on the front courtyard and adjacent jetty – with the backdrop of the cranes and ships that form Hamburg’s maritime heritage.
Florian Gerdes, Marketing Manager Conventions at Hamburg Convention Bureau, explains: “Almost 10 million containers were handled in Hamburg last year – it’s the second largest port in Europe and widely considered to be ‘Germany’s gateway to the world’. Hamburg would not be the city it is today without its port – it has been the lifeblood of the city for centuries and continues to influence it in so many ways.
“Some truly unique and exciting venues form part of Hamburg’s proud seafaring heritage and they are well worth planners considering if they want to offer delegates a truly memorable maritime experience.”
