NEWH Student Award winners, left to right: Marissa Miltiadous (Middlesex University), Aruzhan Makanova (Ravensbourne University), Shafaq Sultana (Middlesex University), and James Ingram (Ravensbourne University).

This year’s winning entries touch upon several of the trends revealed and explored at Sleep & Eat over the recent past as well as this year’s theme of ‘Social FlexAbility’ in our age of digital detachment.

LONDON – Following the excited visitor response to its first student showcase at Sleep & Eat last year, NEWH will be returning this year to present the work of its four 2019 scholarship winners. The competition, which reached out to second year students studying interior design and architecture at leading UK universities, as well as placement students working within design firms, invited entries on a theme related to their academic work. The winners were: Aruzhan Makanova (Innovation); James Ingram (Ideology); Marissa Miltiadous (Integrity); and Shafaq Sultana (Inspiration). Across the two days of Sleep & Eat, the students will be on hand to talk through their ideas, learn from the pros and, if last year is anything to go by, to inspire, uplift and delight them!

This year’s winning entries touch upon several of the trends revealed and explored at Sleep & Eat over the recent past as well as this year’s theme of ‘Social FlexAbility’ in our age of digital detachment.

Aruzhan Makanova from Ravensbourne considered the interaction and interlocking of hotel and office spaces in her ‘Symbiosis Building’, designing a stunning timber lattice organism that interlocks into an existing structure of concrete and steel to provide a natural hub for office workers, tourists and local people.

Also studying at Ravensbourne, James Ingram entitled his submission for a hotel and artist’s studio hybrid ‘Stay-Arty’. It is a bold and imaginative reminder that architecture can be provocative and fun and that it can go far beyond just creating a building into providing a truly unique experience.

Shafaq Sultan of Middlesex University, when challenged to create a starter studio for contemporary crafts people, designed an integration of workshop, retail and living full of natural light, colour and filtered views. Her concept stands out for its courageous and beautiful ideas.

Marissa Miltiadous describes her project as a ‘studio of fresh thought’, an organic, urban venue where designers and artisans can work, experiment, create, live and sell. An interior design student at Middlesex, her vision was to create a space that would promote individual and community growth.

The panel of judges comprised Silvia de Madeiros, Design Manager of Rosewood Hotel Group, Markus Hirst, Head of Design of Ron Arad, Caroline Cundall, Interior Design Director for Europe of InterContinental Hotels Group, and Pavel Krajcik, Europe’s Managing Director of Lasvit; it was hosted by Libby Bull, NEWH Director of Scholarships.

NEWH is the premier international networking resource for the hospitality sector, linking education with business through events, scholarships and leadership development. Every year, the UK chapter of NEWH awards three or four scholarships and has ambitions to grow the number and extend the programme to help kick-start the careers of more young people wishing to enter the industry. The sponsors of the 2019 scholarship awards were: Panaz (Innovation), GROHE (Ideology), Ulster Carpets (Inspiration), and Indigo Art (Integrity).
