The architectural race for the tallest buildings in the world has been an ongoing saga as countries continue to unveil new plans for the newest, towering buildings – as a result, cities have exploded in size and tourists have been gathering by the hundreds to visit these iconic attractions.

Giants in the sky
Dubai two decades ago was a fairly underdeveloped city, yet fast forward to today and the city has gone through rapid urbanization and now holds the title for the tallest building in the world – the Burj Khalifa. Dubai’s iconic structure sits at a whopping height of 829m. The Burj Khalifa has been the tallest building in the world since 2009.

Prior to the structure of the Burj Khalifa, the Taipei 101 located in Taipei, Taiwan, held the title for the world’s tallest building from 2004 until 2010 at a total height of 509m. This supertall building was a 12.68% increase in height from the Petronas Towers, in Malaysia, at 451m – which held the title of tallest buildings in the world between 1998 and 2004.

In 1908, New York’s mission to create the most iconic skyline became apparent when the city, year after year, competed against its own structures. From 1908 to 1971 New York City held the title for the tallest building, by developing and completing seven buildings in total, each one increasing by up to and over 10%.

What will the skylines of the future look like?
In 2018, China built more skyscrapers than ever before, so It comes as no surprise that this rapid growth is continuing, as the country sets out to build even more skyscrapers in the future. Looking toward the future, China has 168 skyscrapers in the pipeline which are either currently under construction or in proposal stages. This is a 200% increase from the current number of buildings going under construction.

Another up-and-coming city in the line up for a spectacular skyline is the U.S. hosting 13 skyscrapers in its cities. The U.S. is looking to double this figure to 26 in the future.

Saudi Arabia has also stepped onto the scene looking to increase its number of skyscrapers in the future by 400% (from 1 to 5). Russia and South Korea are also predicted to increase their number of skyscrapers by 50% over the following years.

Jayne Forrester, Director of International Development at Official-canada-eta.com comments: “Over the decades, we’ve seen vast changes in the world’s architecture. Looking back it's breathtaking to see how much our skylines have changed and what structural megatrends have unfolded before us.

“Many of the world's most unique and iconic buildings are great tourist attractions, driving the country's economy by promoting tourism and improving employment.”
