The name was chosen thanks to an agreement between the Italian company and the Costa. Smeralda Consortium, which will see other joint initiatives taking place over the coming months.

TURKU – During the steel cutting ceremony at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland, the name of the new Costa Cruises ship powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), to be delivered in October 2019, was announced: she will be called Costa Smeralda.

The announcement is the result of a partnership agreement between the Italian company and the Costa Smeralda Consortium, the Consortium developing and promoting Costa Smeralda (or Emerald Coast: Sardinia's main tourist area) and owner of the brand name 'Costa Smeralda'.

The partnership also involves a number of joint initiatives that will be publicised over the coming months. “We have decided to name the new flagship in the Costa fleet after one of the most enchanting and renowned destinations in Italy. The Costa Smeralda area is an exceptionally beautiful place that combines all the excellence that Italy’s finest has to offer, with the glamorous allure that it has become famous for over the years,” said Neil Palomba, President of Costa Cruises. “But this isn't the only reason that this name was chosen. The Consortium's commitment to sustainability issues and practices has meant we have found common ground between us on many fronts. So it is with great honour that our ship Costa Smeralda will represent the beauty of this great Sardinia’s destination and will be an ambassador for everything that is magnificent about Italy.”

Renzo Persico, Chairman of the Costa Smeralda Consortium said: “We are delighted to be able to collaborate on this wonderful project side by side with Costa Cruises, a leading player in its sector and universally recognised as a strong and reliable company. We are also truly honoured that the name that has been chosen for the new flagship is "Costa Smeralda", the most prestigious brand name in international tourism, and to this day inseparably connected to our land: by virtue of the excellence achieved around the globe by the Costa Cruises group, the Costa Smeralda Consortium wanted to entrust its name to this new ship that will take this name to all the continents around the world."

During the steel cutting ceremony, Costa also announced the new livery that will appear on the bow of its ships in the fleet over the coming months. The design is a stylised version of the tricolour Italian flag, and thanks to its undulating shape, it recalls flags fluttering in the wind at sea. The ship names will also be updated and will be larger in size than the current names.

“With the new livery we are reinforcing the concept of "Italianness" on board our ships even more,” concluded Palomba. “Taking our Italian spirit around the world has always been a source of pride for us. And from today we will be doing so even more clearly, with a reproduction of the Italian flag also fluttering on the bow of our ships."

Costa Cruises unveils design of 'Italy's finest' cabins of new ships
Costa Cruises has revealed the design of the cabins developed for the two new 180,000-ton ships, scheduled for delivery in 2019 and 2021. The cabins, designed by Milan based architectural studio Dordoni Architetti, are inspired by the ships’ theme “Italy’s Finest.”

Dordoni Architetti is one of four internationally renowned design firms selected to craft the interiors of the new ships, including Jeffrey Beers International, Partner Ship Design and Rockwell Group. Under the leadership of Creative Director Adam D. Tihany, the design team is creating an innovative new design concept that builds on the history and tradition of the Costa brand with a bespoke realization of the ‘Italy’s Finest’ philosophy.

“Italy’s Finest, to me, is a national pride that has been passed from generation to generation,” said Tihany. “It’s a place where every taste feels like a dream and where time itself seems to slow. Here style is king, beauty is queen and the attitudes of the people could change the world. These ideas of Pride, Taste, Time, Style and Attitude helped to shape our interpretation of the ships’ theme.”

In the cabins, national pride meets bespoke Italian style in a unique tour through Italy. Beginning on deck four with Palermo, the tour moves north through 11 decks, where each deck is represented by cities like Capri, Rome, Venice, Florence, Milan, ending with Bellagio on deck seventeen, like a “Grand Tour”, through the most recognizable and celebrated Italian beauties.

On every deck, guests are guided in a city walk, experiencing the genuine taste of each city through a unique design featuring symbolic colours for walls and carpets, typical pattern and texture and refined, handselected photomurals that together captures the spirit of the city.

From the elevator landing and across the corridors the city inspired design embraces guests, accompanying them to their cabins, where it's still present in a softer way: pattern, texture and colors are once more used to capture the character and spirit of each city, to create a comfortable residential space perfectly representing the Italy's Finest philosophy.

Entering the cabins, passengers are welcomed by a photographic panel with embedded television depicting a strongly recognizable city view whose colors are harmonized with a city-inspired graphic pattern on the opposite wall covering, creating a homogeneous, contemporary and relaxing space. Bathrooms have a unique, whimsical feel with walls cladded to look like marble and a full height window in the shower designed to open up the perception of space in the cabin and improve the light.

“As in Italian cities the different artistic, cultural and historical uniqueness melt together becoming an unparalleled whole, so the different elements of the cabins harmonize and combine each other to build a unique, elegant and timeless environment: “La citta in una stanza” ("The city in a room")” – said Dordoni Architetti.

As part of the Costa initiative to create an authentic “Made in Italy” design experience, all the cabin furniture, lighting, fabric and accessories were custom designed by Dordoni and created in collaboration with top Italian manufacturers Molteni&C (sofas and chairs), Roda (balcony furniture), Flos(decorative lightings), Dedar and Rubelli (fabrics and upholstery). These signature Italian brands are part of a larger ship-wide design collaboration with 15 total manufacturers including companies like Kartell, Poltrona Frau and Alessi. With the participation of these renowned brands, the new Costa ships will be designed and outfitted by “Italy’s Finest.”
