Greater numbers of Japanese tourists made the long-haul trip to Greece this year despite the Asian nation's recent lag in demand for travel to Europe generally. The Hellenic Tourism Organisation's (EOT<.>) Far East office found that Japanese arrivals in Greece rose by 6 to 8 percent in 1999.

Only northern Europe, and western Europe to an extent, have seen a rise in Japanese visitors. Demand for package tours has fallen and this appears to have affected destinations distant from Japan<.>. Nevertheless, the business travel market has indicated optimism, stemming mainly from travel agents.

Turkey and Spain – which is conducting a joint promotion with Portugal in this lucrative Asian market – are presenting stiff competition for the Japanese tourist dollar.

Most of the Japanese who visited Greece this year booked through tour operators Japan Travel Bureau, Kinki Nippon Tourist, Hankyu Express International, HIS and Nippon Travel Agency.
