Travel Smart: 5 world destinations where your dollar gets you more

With the dollar booming, now is the time to take advantage of your vacation days, and these are five of the best countries where you’ll save money.

Travel means many different things to different people, but most would agree that venturing out of one’s home country is an experience of a lifetime. With the opportunity to explore another culture in another part of the world people often learn much more about themselves in the process.

The downside is that international travel can be expensive. Airline tickets, hotels, food, and tours can all add up very quickly, so having the available funds is important. For many, this type of travel has been out of reach simply due to the expense; however, things are looking up.

The U.S. dollar has been outperforming many of the world’s currencies over the last year. What does this mean? Simply put, the favorable exchange rates now grant your dollar more buying power over the money used in other countries. In addition, travel experts have noticed that not only is the dollar stronger, but prices for goods and services internationally have dropped.

With the dollar booming, now is the time to take advantage of your vacation days, and these are five of the best countries where you’ll save money.

Russia
Russia’s economy has been sluggish over the last year and the Russian ruble has fallen to an all-time low against the dollar. Typically Russia is a very expensive country to travel in, but thanks to the strong dollar and lowered prices within the country, now is the time to visit one of the most interesting places in the world.

Keep in mind, however, that Russian visas are notoriously difficult to obtain and the process can take up to three months. Apply early and utilize various travel services that specialize in Russian visas for tourists.

Mexico
Mexico has long attracted travelers due to the overall inexpensiveness of most goods and services throughout the country. Of course, the luxury resorts of Cancun and Puerto Vallarta are still costly, but the U.S. dollar is crushing the Mexican peso and this means that you can save more money on a vacation to Mexico now than you would have even one year ago.

Be warned, though. Many retailers and hotels accept U.S. dollars, but they won’t give you a favorable exchange rate. Always pay all hotel and restaurant bills in Mexican pesos, and simply withdraw pesos from the ATM when you need cash, as opposed to using money exchange services. This way you’ll maximize your savings.

Greece
Greece’s economic woes of late might put some visitors off, but now is the perfect time to take that trip to Athens or the beautiful Greek islands. The prices on goods and services have been slashed, and your dollar will go farther in this amazing country than it has in a very long time.

Also, tourism is one of cornerstones of the Greek economy, so as tourists take advantage of the low prices, they’re also helping to boost the economy, which means everyone wins.

Norway
Norway and the other countries of Scandinavia have long been known as some of the most expensive places on the planet. In some cases, even a bunk in a hostel in Oslo might have been as much as $100, but not anymore. As the rest of Europe sees its economy slow down, so does Norway, and prices have fallen dramatically.

Now’s your chance to visit the legendary fjords, explore the beautiful countryside, and if you have children who are obsessed with a certain Disney movie, now’s the time to show them where it all happened.

Italy
Italy has long been a favorite destination for people from all over the world due to its impressive historical sites, stunning coastlines, and delicious food. However, in a way similar to Greece, Italy’s economy has been struggling lately, and your dollar beats the euro hands down.

Take advantage of the low prices on lodging and food and take that dream trip to Rome to see the Colosseum, visit the Vatican, or simply eat your fill of gelato. Italy is one of the best bargains in Western Europe right now and you can be a part of it.

Travel is one of the greatest gifts that you can give yourself or someone you love. Thanks to the strong U.S. dollar, that gift can now be cheaper than ever. Do some research on your dream destinations and see how much your dollar can buy, then book your ticket, grab your passport, and head out to see the world.
