Cancun reports increase in visitors during first half of 2016

Cancún, Mexico

Highlights of January – May 2016 arrival data show that U.S. visitors set a record with 1,057,999 visitors, up 5 percent when compared to the same time frame the previous year.

CANCUN, Mexico – The Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce a two percent increase in visitors between January and May when compared to the same period last year. The addition of new hotels, restaurants, and other attractions in 2016 will help support the continued growth of visitors to the destination.

“The destination continues to evolve year-after-year, always offering visitors fresh reasons to come back again and again,” said Jesus Almaguer, CEO of the Cancun CVB. “Cancun’s constant commitment to the expansion and diversification of its tourism offerings will lead the city into yet another record-breaking year in arrivals.”

Some of the most recent updates in terms of renovations, openings and new builds for Cancun and the Treasures of the Caribbean, which comprise of Puerto Morelos, Isla Mujeres, Isla Holbox and Isla Contoy, include:

Breathless Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa: In May 2016 Puerto Morelos welcomed Breathless Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa, a vibrant and modern resort located between the Caribbean Sea and the Lagoon of Bahia Petempic. The adults-only property boasts 526 all-suite accommodations and some of the all-inclusive perks enjoyed by guests include: weekly themed parties, exclusive access to 10 lively bars and lounges, special guest DJ performances, pool parties and more.

Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach Cancun: July marked the one-year anniversary of the debut of the property’s $2 million, 40,000-square-foot Coral KidZ Club, and the hotel’s introduction of a new Mayan-themed outdoor sand-and-water-filled play zone. The latest addition is connected to the club and allows kids to embark on an adventure through the jungles of the Yucatan. Young guests began enjoying portions of the water park this summer and the final unveiling of the remaining attractions will take place in November.

Hyatt Ziva Cancun: In July 2016, Hyatt Ziva Cancun debuted "Turquoize," an adults-only haven situated in the heart of the resort. The 18-and-up beachfront tower boasts guestrooms of 700 square feet that include spa-like bathrooms with rainfall showers, turndown service, a private balcony and hot tub, and more.

Temptation Resort & Spa Cancun: The adult-centric property is currently undergoing a multi-million-dollar renovation project. The resort will close on September 25, 2016, and reopen again during fall 2017. The renovated hotel will feature upgraded guest rooms, restaurants, spa and much more.

Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort: Palace Resorts transformed its signature property’s convention center into KidZania Go!, an interactive playground that debuted earlier this year as part of the resort’s all-inclusive annual summer programming. The resort will also host performances by Grammy-award winning funk group Kool & The Gang and “I Will Survive” singer Gloria Gaynor on November 18 – 19.

Thus far, Cancun has received many recognitions in 2016 from top travel agencies and awards including 2016’s top Labor Day International Destinations for North Americans by Cheapoair, and the #1 most popular international summer destination by TripAdvisor.

As Cancun continues to expand its offerings, the lift on flight restrictions established by the U.S. and Mexican government in August will ease travel for visitors by providing them with more travel options and possibly more affordable airfare. Following the announcement, several airlines have jumped at the opportunity to expand into previously unserved cities. Some of these new routes include:

· Flights from Kelowna, B.C. on Sundays running from November 6, 2016 – April 9, 2017 – provided by Sunwing Vacations on a weekly basis
· Daily non-stop flights from Los Angeles starting December 4, 2016 – provided by Southwest Airlines.
· Daily non-stop flights from JFK New York beginning December 17, 2016 – provided by Delta Airlines.
· Non-stop service from Tampa beginning March 19, 2017 – provided by Vacation Express on weekly basis departing every Friday.

Highlights of January – May 2016 arrival data show that U.S. visitors set a record with 1,057,999 visitors, up 5 percent when compared to the same time frame the previous year. Other countries included in the top visitors list were:

· Great Britain with 49,918 visitors
· Argentina with 29,575 tourists
· Brazil with 28,054
· Colombia with 21,540 visitors.
