Oligopolistic tendencies in the tourist transport market and methods of promoting tourism between Greece and Turkey were among the main topics discussed at a recent meeting of Greek and Turkish entrepreneurs on Crete. Representatives of the Association of Greek Tourist Enterprises (SETE) and the Turkish Tourism Investors Association (TYD) confirmed that Greece and Turkey shared many similarities in terms of incoming tourism and rely heavily on the markets of northern and central Europe.

Participants agreed that development of both countries' tourism sectors would prove mutually beneficial and that this could be achieved through an upgrade of quality and was influenced by cooperation between the public and private sectors.

The Greek delegation noted that Greece, as a member of the EU, and Turkey, as a candidate member, shared common interests in the development of a European policy on tourism. Participants were told that as such a policy was lacking, the two neighbouring countries should join forces to promote its creation. Furthermore, the Greek delegation underlined a need for the tourism industry to enter into the General Agreement on Trade and Services. It is expected that similar meetings will take place regularly in future.
