Sheltair to expand aviation complex at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport

Sheltair, Florida’s privately-owned group of fixed base operations (FBOs), has broken ground on its Phase I expansion plans at the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL) with the construction of a new $13.6 million facility. Phase I of the master-planned, three-phase development project will open in early 2013 and include 134,806 square feet of hangar and office space on more than 11 acres of land on the west side of the airfield. This is the first new general aviation facility to be constructed in more than a decade on the west side of the airport.

Sheltair CEO Jerry Holland stated, "Not since Sheltair opened its state-of-the-art FLL campus 23 years ago, has a project of this magnitude been constructed to support the general aviation community on the airfield. When complete, it will be the largest general aviation complex ever constructed at this airport."

Phase I of the new complex will provide exceptional exposure for businesses by offering the only street front office space on Lee Wagener Blvd. In addition to the built-to-suit office spaces, which range from 2,500 to 5,600 square feet, the adjoining hangars will have a unique, tilt-up design for maximum hangar space and concrete construction for improved severe weather protection for aircraft. The hangar’s 28-foot doors will allow for housing of a variety of aircraft, up to a Gulfstream G650.

Turner Construction Company is serving as general contractor for this development. Phases II and III will increase the total acreage of the project to 18.92 acres and the square footage to 359,000.  The final two phases will be underway in 2014.

"We are excited about this new development and are looking forward to meeting the needs of aviation related businesses with our expanding world-class facility at one of the nation’s fastest growing international airports," said Holland.

Tenants will also benefit from the many amenities located at Sheltair’s FLL property, including a 24-hour full service Sheltair FBO, 24-hour on-site U.S. Customs office, direct access to the new 8,000 foot runway, Hertz rental car facility, cafe and dining area on premises, 24-hour office and hangar access, and executive boardroom and conference room options.
