Men and women’s holiday hotel room requirements revealed

According to a new study by an online travel agency in the UK, men and women have very different requirements when it comes to choosing a hotel room. The research has uncovered what men and women look for in their ideal hotel rooms when booking a holiday, before committing to a stay.

New research by an online travel agency in the UK has revealed the different requirements that men and women look for in a hotel room before booking a holiday; with women prioritising a sea view and roll tap bath and men favouring accommodation with air conditioning and minibar. Furthermore, women were prepared to pay £110.00 more per room, per night than their male counterparts.

According to a new study by an online travel agency in the UK, men and women have very different requirements when it comes to choosing a hotel room. The research has uncovered what men and women look for in their ideal hotel rooms when booking a holiday, before committing to a stay.

1,782 people were polled in the research by sunshine.co.uk, which formed part of an ongoing study into the holiday preferences and behaviour of Britons. All respondents were aged 18 and over and were from the UK. Everyone taking part had been on holiday abroad in the last 12 months and had stayed in a hotel. Those taking part were asked questions about what features and qualities they tended to look for in a hotel room.

When asked, ‘What do you prioritise when booking a hotel room for a holiday abroad?’ and provided with a list of possible answers, respondents could select as many choices as they felt applied to them. The team at sunshine.co.uk analysed the responses to find what the most common responses were for men and women.

According to the poll, men have the following top five priorities when it comes to booking a hotel room for a holiday abroad:

1. Air con – 76%
2. Complimentary minibar – 61%
3. Big screen TV – 52%
4. Presence of balcony/terrace – 34%
5. Daily housekeeping service – 27%

According to the poll, women have the following top five priorities when it comes to booking a hotel room for a holiday abroad:
1. Sea view – 85%
2. Roll top/freestanding bath – 59%
3. Comfortable/feature bed – 56%
4. Cleanliness – 51%
5. Complimentary toiletries -38%

When the male respondents taking part were asked to specify how much they were usually willing to pay for a hotel room on holiday (per room, per night in GBP), the average response was revealed to be ‘£55.00’. However, when women were asked the same question, the average answer stated was ‘£165.00’; which was £110.00 more than their male counterparts were willing to hand over.

Chris Clarkson, Managing Director of sunshine.co.uk, said the following: “Men and women clearly have different ideas of what makes a hotel room meet their standards. It was interesting for us to see what those differences were, exactly, and we were quite surprised by the results. The fact that, for men, having a big screen TV on their hotel room wish-list seems to suggest that they plan to spend more time in the hotel room than women perhaps do. On the other hand, the freestanding bath selection by women suggests that they perhaps look for a touch of luxury.

“Whatever you look for in a hotel room, do remember that this is only a small part of your holiday. Don’t break the bank by splashing out on 5* luxury if you’ll hardly spend any time there. Often, 3* and 4* hotels provide the touches that you’d normally expect to find in accommodation with a higher star rating. You can always find out what features rooms have in hotels before you book, so just do your research to check you’ll be happy with where you end up staying.”
