New Year's Eve: Hotel rates skyrocket in Los Angeles and Pasadena

In Downtown Los Angeles, less than 15% of hotels are still offering available rooms for New Year's Eve. On average, those limited establishments that do have vacancies are charging over 147% more compared to their regular rates. But some are hiking their rates by a lot more.

LOS ANGELES – Celebrating New Year’s Eve and attending the Rose Bowl are going to be expensive propositions this year for those individuals who have not yet secured a hotel room. A new survey from LosAngelesHotels.org has found that hotel rates have skyrocketed in and around LA this December 31.

The choices for an overnight stay in downtown Los Angeles this New Year’s Eve are currently limited. Fewer than one in six hotels have available rooms at this late hour. And in response to the scarcity, the rates for these rooms have risen by more than 147% compared to normal prices. And some establishments are jacking up their rates substantially more.

Downtown LA’s most affordable double room (minimum 3 stars) isn’t much of a bargain this December 31 either. Indeed, it will cost an overnight guest at least $400.

But if Los Angeles looks expensive, it’s a steal compared to neighboring Pasadena. As the site of the famous Rose Bowl, Pasadena is almost sold out of hotel rooms on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. An overnight stay in Pasadena on either day will cost guests a minimum of $500 if they want a decent hotel room. If a low-budget motel doesn’t bother them, they can still find a room for between $200 and $300 nightly.

Hollywood has a bit more availability this year end. Hotels there have elevated their prices more modestly. Their average price hike is 83%. For the least expensive Hollywood room, a guest will have to spend around $300. For even cheaper accommodations, a year-end traveler will have to look around the LAX airport. In this vicinity, rooms can still be found for less than $200 on New Year’s Eve.

The following table shows the hotels in Los Angeles and Pasadena with the highest rate increases for New Year’s Eve 2015. Regular rates reflect the price for the same room a week later.
