Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport said: “The summer months see the airport at its busiest with schools breaking up and families heading away for that sunshine and relaxation, and those holidays have helped us record our busiest ever June.

“The surge in international passengers reflects the continued growth in our international routes and we’ve seen strong starts to both our Washington D.C. and Beijing routes, while traditional beach destinations like Alicante, Tenerife and Palma have also proven to be popular.

“We make every day a big day for passengers and we want to see that continue by providing more choice for them to get away and have that trip of a lifetime, that weekend break or family visit.”

On the domestic front:

  • BA & BACF reduced frequency to LHR & LCY, but the average aircraft was busier than last year
  • Flybe reduced frequencies on the Southampton route since last year, however Flybe are flying more passengers overall compared to last year as they fly fuller aircraft
  • All airlines were flying more occupied aircraft on average than last June in the domestic market

International market recorded a 10.9% YoY growth due to 24 new routes launched since last June. These are the reasons for the strong growth in more detail:

  • Ryanair operated 13 routes this June that weren’t operated this time last year. The routes launched since June 2017 are: Budapest, Carcassonne, Eindhoven, Baden-Baden (Karlsruhe), Hamburg, Katowice, Nantes, Prague, Szczecin, Toulouse, Venice Treviso, Valencia & Wroclaw.
  • Jet2 are flying a bigger & fuller aircraft on more destinations, and since last June introduced 4 new destinations: Antalya, Dalaman, Kos & Funchal
  • United Airlines’ new Washington DC service is proving to be very popular with strong passenger numbers
  • A new service to Beijing with Hainan Airlines launched
  • Brussels Airlines are flying a bigger aircraft than last year
  • Popular destinations (among others) in June were: Alicante, Palma, Tenerife & Malaga with Jet2; Warsaw & Bratislava with Ryanair; Alicante, Athens & Paphos with easyJet as well as NYC with multiple carriers

Compared to June 2017 we served 25 new routes this May:
