Creation of a reliable basis for BER’s opening, new terminal opened at Schonefeld Airport

The end of November sees the completion of 80 percent of the milestones in planning and construction of the airport terminal.

The Supervisory Board of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH met to discuss the completion of construction and opening of BER, the business plan for 2017, the construction of the government airport and the expansion of Berlin-Schonefeld Airport.

Dr. Karsten Muhlenfeld, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “We will only state a date for the opening of Berlin Brandenburg Airport after a reliable basis has been achieved. This requires, amongst others, approval for the 6th and last amendment to planning permission. In addition the construction and function testing, as well as proof of concept, must be completed successfully for Main Pier North. Furthermore, we will also have to decide in advance, just how the terminal can be used during necessary trial operations.”

Michael Muller, Acting Mayor of Berlin and FBB Chairman of the Supervisory Board: “Looking back on this year, it is obvious that we have made significant progress towards the completion of BER. Approval of the 5thamendment lays to rest questions about smoke extraction, which have gone unanswered for some time. Now we have to resolve the other remaining challenges such as completion of construction andthe start-up of technical systems, as well as the trial operation, as quickly as possible, but above all reliably and safely.”

Current situation at BER
The end of November sees the completion of 80 percent of the milestones in planning and construction of the airport terminal. It was possible to complete the crucial mechanical aspects of the smoke extraction system thanks to approval for the 5thamendment. Construction work in Main Pier North and Main Pier South are still pending, expert audit approvals are being performed. At the same time, technical initial operation is also being performed in these parts of the building. Currently the focus is on Main Pier North. Functions and integrationtests are now being implemented here.

Business plan 2017
The Supervisory Board of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH decided today on an important position for the company by authorising the 2017 business plan. FBB will follow on from its 2016 business plan that showed significant growth, especially with respect to Schonefeld Airport. Within the 2017 business plan, FBB expects a further increase in passenger numbers as well as a positive operativeresult based on increased sales, particularly within the non-aviation sector. In addition, the business plan contains one-off expenses for the start of BER’s operationsas well as the enhancements to Schonefeld Airport to cope with increasing passenger volumes.

Government airport
It is intended initially to relocate the government airport from Tegel to an interim site at Ramp 1, Schonefeld, after the opening of BER. After which the government airport will then move to its final location at Ramp 2. Commissioning of the construction of the interim terminalwill take place at the end of this year.

Expansion of Schonefeld Airport
Expansion of Schonefeld Airport will continue to meet growing passenger numbers. In total 48.8 million euro will be invested over 2016 and 2017. Terminal D, the new arrivals terminal, was opened this morning. Terminal B has already been extended. Renovation of Terminals A and D should start after receipt of planning permission in the second quarter of 2017.
