Munich – Cyprus<.> is anticipating a 10 percent rise in German tourists this year, the director of the island republic`s tourism authority, Andreas Sakkas, told TravelDailyNews during the recent C-B-R<.> 2000 exhibition.

In 1999 239,000 Germans travelled to the Mediterranean country while this year the emphasis will be on alternative forms of tourism, particular in the winter season, with cycling, walking tours and religious trips offered.

These types of packages have proven a great success in Switzerland, where they go by the name of race & travel, and this year marks the first time they are being promoted to the German market. Winter tourism is an immediate priority for Cyprus as visitor capacity in the summer months cannot be stretched much further.

Thirty percent of foreign tourists who visit Cyprus do so in the winter and the majority of hotels stay open. A small number shut from January 15 to March 15.

At C-B-R 2000 Nissi Beach, Hawaii Grand Hotel, Aenias Hotel, Atalante Cruises and Athina Hotel featured at Cyprus` stand.

Condor, Hapag Lloyd, LTU and Eurocypria operate charter flights from Germany to Cyprus year-round.
