U.S. travel agents 2012 air ticket sales up 4.8 percent

Ticket transactions in the US stay flat for January – August 2012 vs. 2011.

ARLINGTON, VA. – ARC, the financial settlement link between airlines and travel sellers, reported that the consolidated dollar value of airline tickets sold by U.S.-based travel agencies increased 4.85 percent year-over-year in the first eight months of 2012 compared to the same period in 2011, and 11.6 percent over the same period in 2010. From January through August 2012, ticket sales totalled $60 billion, compared to $57.2 billion in 2011, and $53.8 billion in 2010.

Year-to-date passenger segments for the first eight months of 2012 increased slightly by 0.24 percent – at 253.9 million segments, compared to 253.3 million in 2011 – while reflecting a 2.28 percent decrease from the same period in 2010. Ticket transactions between January and August 2012 also increased somewhat by 0.22 percent over the same period in 2011, while down by 1.65 percent compared to the same period in 2010.

Results based on sales data ending August 31, 2012 from 14,259 U.S. retail and corporate travel agencies, satellite ticket printing offices, and online travel agencies.
