Designs for 29th Icehotel unveiled as Discover the World confirms #IceFlight schedule for winter season

From an ice-carved candy shop and a frozen swimmer, to a gigantic cat, this year’s hotel will have some incredible art for guests to enjoy when it officially opens on 14 December 2018, including ‘The Living Ocean Suite’ from a British team.

Sweden’s iconic Icehotel has just unveiled the designs for this winter’s hotel which will be built on the banks of the Torne river in Jukkasjärvi, as Nordic travel specialist Discover the World confirms the schedule for its #IceFlight, the exclusive direct flight operated between London Heathrow and Kiruna (just a 20-minute transfer from Icehotel) over the winter season.

From an ice-carved candy shop and a frozen swimmer, to a gigantic cat, this year’s hotel will have some incredible art for guests to enjoy when it officially opens on 14 December 2018, including ‘The Living Ocean Suite’ from a British team.

NEW Icehotel Designs: Following months of deliberation and around 150 submissions, a total of 33 artists (from 13 different countries) have been chosen to create the 29th rendition of Icehotel which will include 15 new Art Suites as well as the iconic Main Hall and Ceremony Hall. This year’s guests will be able to explore an amazing frozen wonderland which reaches from the deep sea to the sky.

‘The Living Ocean Suite’ is from British father and daughter duo Jonathan Paul Green (TV production designer) and Marnie Green (London-based art student). The suite depicts an eerie underwater world inspired by the negative effects of climate change and overfishing, complete with ice-carved corals, shells and fish.

Another suite is called ‘Spruce Woods’ from Canadian friends Christopher Pancoe and Jennie O’Keefe, which gives guests the chance to gather around a central frozen fire in a remote forest camp before sleeping on a frozen bed. ‘Haven’ by artists Jonas Johansson, Jordi Claramunt and Lukas Petko from Sweden, Spain and Slovenia, represents a magical portal of ice guarded by an enormous Phoenix.

Other designs include a flock of birds, the icy Aurora Borealis and a room bursting with frozen flower blossom.

Work on this new hotel actually started in March when the ice was harvested from the nearby Torne River and placed in cold storage. Building will commence in October 2018 with the hotel ready to open on 14 December. The design teams will gather in late November to be personally involved in bringing their concepts to life.

NEW Flight Schedule – Commencing 15 December 2018
Discover the World is offering a total of 11 departures for its direct flight between December 2018 and March 2019, with the inaugural flight departing on 15 December. Dates also incude the chance to celebrate Christmas and New Year in Swedish Lapland surrounded by fireworks and festivities, as well as February half term.

The exclusive #IceFlight takes guests directly from London Heathrow to Kiruna in Swedish Lapland (a simple 20-minute transfer from Icehotel) in just 3.5 hours and eliminates the hassle of long transfers via Stockholm, enabling guests to stay for a three night break.
