Melia Hotels International leads health and safety standards in Cuban hotels

Designed to monitor standards, detect failures and recommend immediate corrections, the system will be set up and monitored by experienced auditors from Guadalajara University and the University of Mexico City to “benchmark standards, differentiate the brand, and ensure operational effectiveness”.

Melia Hotels International (MHI) remains on the innovation path by adding a new safety auditing system in three of its 26 hotels in Cuba. The E-Cristal system of Cristal International Standards will help maintain optimal accommodation standards.

Melia has partnered with Cristal International Standards to pilot the assessment of food safety and general hygiene levels in the selected facilities through the E-Cristal Food Check and Safety Check modules.

Designed to monitor standards, detect failures and recommend immediate corrections, the system will be set up and monitored by experienced auditors from Guadalajara University and the University of Mexico City to “benchmark standards, differentiate the brand, and ensure operational effectiveness”.

“As a leading hotel group we take our responsibility for customer wellbeing extremely seriously and as such, hygiene is a top priority for Melia. We believe this partnership with Cristal International Standards shows our commitment to our customers and we hope that other hotels in the region will follow our example and help make Cuba one of the top tourism destinations in the world,” said Francisco Camps Orfila, Sub Director of Melia Hotels International Cuba.

Rated by Hotels Magazine as the 16th best hotel chain in the world, MHI operates 351 hotels in 35 countries, focusing on sustainable practices and a customer and quality-orientated philosophy.

David Solarzano, Mexico Director of Cristal International Standards, says, “This is the first hotel chain to undertake independent auditing of its quality and safety standards in Cuba. It is a significant indicator of Melia’s commitment to its customers; both in terms of safety and their overall experience when visiting the hotels. We are relishing the chance to work with Melia to ensure their back-office hygiene will match the fantastic front-of-house service they provide on a daily basis.”

Following a trial period, Cristal International Standards’ E-Cristal system will be tested in the remaining hotels managed by MHI in leading holiday destinations in Cuba.

Established on the island since the early 1990s, Melia Hotels International has played a major role setting up and improving quality standards in the accommodation sector nationwide.

With average receipts peaking at $2.1bn per year, the tourism industry is one of the key drivers of Cuba’s economic and social development.
